On August 27, 2016, during her State of the Nation address during the 2016 Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO) Annual General Assembly (AGA) in North Bay, MNO President Margaret Froh announced the formation of the MNO Commission on Métis Rights and Self-Government (the Commission). Establishing the Commission was one of President Froh’s major commitments during the 2016 MNO general election.
President Froh announced the names of seven MNO citizens from across Ontario who would serve on the Commission. “Our Commissioners – four women and three men -- come from across the province,” explained President Froh, “and represent a good cross section of our citizens including our youth, elders, harvesters, as well as French and Michif language speakers. Their job is to help lead a forward-looking dialogue with our citizens on some key issues—Métis rights and self-government – to listen to citizens’ voices and report back.”?
The Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO) Commission on Métis Rights and Self-Government province-wide community engagement sessions were completed on June 6, 2017.
Since February, the Commissioners consulted and engaged with MNO citizens in all 29 MNO communities across Ontario as well as with MNO Veterans’ and Youth Councils and the Women’s Secretariat of the Métis Nation of Ontario. The Commission started its engagement sessions on February 28, 2017, in Owen Sound with the MNO Great Lakes Métis Council and the last session was completed on June 6, 2017 with the MNO Windsor-Essex-Kent Métis Council.
During the Commission engagement sessions, MNO citizens were asked to provide their input in four key areas: click the links below to access resources related to each theme and related questions.
The Commissioners are in the process of writing a report of their findings and with the Provisional Council of the Métis Nation of Ontario, will present their findings and recommendations to the 2017 MNO AGA.
