Last year proved to be a very busy and productive year for the M¨¦tis Nation of Ontario (MNO) at the local, regional and provincial levels.? From the federal election, to the hearing of the?Harry Daniels v. Canada?case at the Supreme Court of Canada, to passage of the?M¨¦tis Nation of Ontario Secretariat Act,?the M¨¦tis Nation is on the move in 2016!

In order to provide M¨¦tis citizens and M¨¦tis leadership at the local and regional levels updates on progress being made nationally and provincially, the MNO held a series of Community Information Sessions throughout February in order to provide updates on the following:

  • M¨¦tis rights and legal issues, including, the pending decision from the Supreme Court of Canada in Harry Daniels v. Canada, M¨¦tis harvesting and the development of a M¨¦tis claims process to address M¨¦tis land and rights related issues;
  • The relationship with the federal government, including, the Liberal Party¡¯s commitments to the M¨¦tis Nation, the implementation of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission¡¯s recommendations and the upcoming Inquiry on Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women and Girls.
  • The relationship with the provincial government, including, developments under the MNO-Ontario Framework Agreement, the passage of the M¨¦tis Nation of Ontario Secretariat Act in December 2015 and moving forward on implementing this ground-breaking legislation with M¨¦tis citizens and Community Councils.
  • Updates on programs, services and supports available to M¨¦tis citizens across the province in the areas of labour market training, education, health and much more!

For those citizens that are not able to attend these meetings, the materials and presentations from these meetings are available online (see links below).

¡°This is an exciting time for the M¨¦tis Nation both provincially and federally!? Through these Community Information Sessions, we want to ensure M¨¦tis citizens and Community Councils have information about the opportunities before the MNO and to capitalize on those opportunities. It is only by working---together---that we will advance our collective agenda as Ontario M¨¦tis,¡± said MNO President Lipinski.
